A total of 153 Boy Scouts were awarded their religious emblems at a special Mass held on May 21, 2006 in the Cathedral. The total includes 119 boys who earned the Ad Altare Dei emblem and 36 young men and women from Scout Troops and Venture Crews around the Archdiocese who were awarded the prestigious Pope Pius XII emblem.
The Ad Altare Dei emblem, a program that involves the study of the seven sacraments, originated in the Archdiocese of Los Angelese and was first awarded in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1926. It has since been promoted by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.
Monsignor Kevin Kostelnik, pastor of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, was also recognized by the Catholic Committee on Scouting, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with the highly prized St. George Emblem, which is awarded to adults leaders who have made a significant contribution to the Catholic Scouting movement among our youth.
